Navy football looking to lean on its defense featuring nine …

As Navy football gears up for the upcoming season, the team is placing a heavy emphasis on its defense, which will feature nine returning starters. With a solid core of experienced players, the Midshipmen are counting on their defense to be the backbone of the squad and help navigate the challenges ahead.

The 2023 season saw the Navy defense show flashes of dominance, but inconsistency plagued them at times. However, with key players returning, there is optimism that the unit can build on last year’s experiences and emerge as a more cohesive and reliable force. Among the returning starters are senior linebacker Johnny Hodges and safety Rayuan Lane, both of whom played critical roles in anchoring the defense last season. Hodges’ leadership and ability to read plays will be instrumental in helping the defense maintain its structure, while Lane’s ball-hawking skills will be key in creating turnovers and shutting down the passing game.

Head coach Brian Newberry has expressed his confidence in the defensive unit, noting that their familiarity with each other and the system puts them in a strong position. “We’re fortunate to have so many experienced guys back on defense. They know what it takes to perform at a high level, and we expect them to be the leaders on this team,” Newberry said during a recent press conference.

While the offense works to find its rhythm, particularly with a new starting quarterback under center, Navy’s defense is expected to be a stabilizing force. With nine returning starters and a new season of opportunity, the Midshipmen are poised to lean heavily on their defense in the pursuit of success.
