As part of their “Player to Watch” series, Land-Grant Holy Land is focusing on Ohio State football players to keep an eye on this season, leading up to the season opener against Akron.
One of the most intriguing newcomers to Ohio State is Caleb Downs, a transfer from Alabama. Downs had an outstanding freshman year at Alabama, where he made history by leading the team in tackles with 107, becoming the first freshman to do so. His performance included 3.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, and contributions on special teams.
Downs was recognized as the Shaun Alexander National Freshman of the Year and earned several All-American honors. With a strong football pedigree, including an NFL background in his family, Downs was a highly sought-after recruit in high school.
Now at Ohio State, Downs is expected to significantly enhance the Buckeye secondary, which was already one of the nation’s best in 2023. He might also contribute on offense and special teams, potentially giving Ohio State a much-needed boost.
Downs’ arrival could elevate Ohio State’s defense from good to elite, making him potentially the team’s most impactful newcomer of 2024.
