Forever a Duke Icon: University Officially Renames Basketball Practice Facility ‘The Christian Laettner Court,’ Honoring His Unparalleled Contributions and Solidifying His Place as a Legend
In a heartfelt tribute to one of the most legendary players in college basketball history, Duke University has officially renamed its basketball practice facility “The Christian Laettner Court.” This honor recognizes Laettner’s immense impact on the Duke basketball program and celebrates his enduring legacy as one of the most iconic Blue Devils of all time. The ceremony, attended by former teammates, coaches, students, and fans, served as a reminder of Laettner’s extraordinary achievements and his place in college basketball lore.

Christian Laettner’s name is synonymous with greatness at Duke. As a central figure in the Blue Devils’ rise to national prominence in the early 1990s, Laettner led the team to four consecutive Final Four appearances and back-to-back NCAA Championships in 1991 and 1992. His poise, skill, and competitive fire were on full display throughout his college career, culminating in perhaps the most famous shot in NCAA history — a last-second buzzer-beater to defeat Kentucky in the 1992 East Regional Final, now known simply as “The Shot.”
By naming the practice facility in his honor, Duke is not only acknowledging Laettner’s remarkable athletic contributions but also the influence he continues to have on the program’s culture. “Christian didn’t just play for Duke — he defined Duke basketball during one of the most dominant stretches in our history,” said Duke Athletics Director Nina King during the unveiling. “His leadership, work ethic, and sheer will to win set the standard for every Blue Devil who has come through this program.”
The Christian Laettner Court will serve as a daily source of inspiration for current and future Duke athletes. Outfitted with memorabilia and highlights from his career, the facility is a living tribute to excellence, embodying the competitive spirit that Laettner brought to every game and practice. For Laettner, the honor is deeply personal. “I gave everything I had to this program, and to see my name permanently attached to the court where future champions will train — it means everything to me,” he shared.
As Duke looks to the future, the renaming of the practice facility ensures that Christian Laettner’s legacy will continue to shape and inspire generations of Blue Devils. A true icon, forever a Duke.
