NFL Shock: Elijah Moore and top Ole Miss stars that were surprisingly overlooked by NFL sides in recent years

The University of Mississippi, better known as Ole Miss, has a storied football history filled with dynamic athletes and unforgettable moments. However, despite their college success, some Ole Miss players have entered the NFL Draft with less fanfare than expected, leaving fans and analysts scratching their heads. These overlooked stars, whether undrafted or selected much later than anticipated, often go on to prove their doubters wrong. Here are the top five Ole Miss standouts who were surprisingly overlooked in recent NFL drafts.

1. Elijah Moore (2021 Draft, Round 2, Pick 34)

Despite a stellar junior season in 2020 where Elijah Moore led the SEC in receptions (86) and receiving yards (1,193), the wide receiver fell to the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Many believed Moore’s elite route running, quickness, and ability to create separation made him a first-round talent. His draft stock was hurt by questions about his size (5’10”, 178 lbs) and whether his skill set would translate to the NFL.

However, Moore quickly silenced doubters, becoming a reliable target during his rookie season with the New York Jets. His ability to operate as a slot receiver and occasional deep threat showcased his versatility. Many NFL teams that passed on Moore in the first round likely regret their decision today.

2. Dawson Knox (2019 Draft, Round 3, Pick 96)

Dawson Knox’s journey to the NFL was unconventional. At Ole Miss, he was part of a loaded wide receiver corps featuring D.K. Metcalf and A.J. Brown, which limited his opportunities to shine as a tight end. Knox went undrafted after declaring for the draft but was eventually picked in the third round by the Buffalo Bills.

Critics doubted Knox due to his limited college production — he didn’t score a single touchdown during his time at Ole Miss. However, his athleticism and potential were undeniable. Fast forward to the NFL, and Knox has become one of Josh Allen’s most trusted targets, earning praise for his ability to block, catch in traffic, and contribute in critical situations.

3. Benito Jones (2020 Draft, Undrafted Free Agent)

As a dominant force on the defensive line, Benito Jones was a key player for the Rebels. In his senior season, he recorded 10 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks, earning All-SEC honors. Despite his production, Jones went undrafted in 2020, much to the surprise of Ole Miss fans.

Jones eventually signed with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent and worked his way onto the active roster. His ability to plug gaps and stop the run has made him a valuable rotational player. While Jones hasn’t achieved superstar status, his success as an undrafted player proves he was undervalued during the draft process.

4. Evan Engram (2017 Draft, Round 1, Pick 23)

While Evan Engram was technically a first-round pick, his selection at No. 23 felt low given his elite production at Ole Miss. Engram was a matchup nightmare in college, combining tight end size with wide receiver speed. He led all tight ends in the NCAA with 926 receiving yards in his senior season.

Critics questioned his blocking ability, which caused him to slide down draft boards. However, his impact as a pass-catcher has been undeniable in the NFL. Engram became an immediate contributor for the New York Giants and later revitalized his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars. His versatility and athleticism have solidified his status as one of the most dynamic tight ends in the league.

5. Javon Patterson (2019 Draft, Round 7, Pick 246)

Javon Patterson was a three-year starter on the Ole Miss offensive line, showcasing versatility by playing both guard and center. Despite his leadership and experience, Patterson slipped to the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft, where he was selected by the Indianapolis Colts.

Many teams likely overlooked Patterson due to concerns about his size and ability to handle powerful NFL defensive linemen. Injuries also hampered his early NFL career, but Patterson has worked hard to establish himself as a dependable depth piece on various rosters. While not a superstar, his fall to the seventh round was surprising given his college accolades.
