The Utah Jazz are set to release two-way player Jason Preston, making room for the signing of forward David Jones on a two-way contract, according to league sources.
Preston, who signed a two-way deal late last season, played in just seven games for the Jazz before spending most of his time with the SLC Stars. This season, he has been sidelined due to a calf injury, and his recovery timeline has prompted the team to bring in another player for the open roster spot. Despite the release, sources suggest Preston may remain in Salt Lake City during his rehab, leaving the door open for a potential future with the team.
David Jones, who played four years of college basketball at DePaul, St. John’s, and Memphis, joins the Jazz after a brief stint with the G League’s Mexico City Capitanes. During his season at Memphis, Jones averaged 21.8 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 2.2 steals per game while shooting 45.9% from the field and 38% from three-point range.
Jones is expected to spend most of his time with the SLC Stars but provides added depth to the Jazz’s front court, which has been plagued by injuries this season. The move gives the Jazz much-needed flexibility as they navigate their roster challenges.
