The New York Jets have dismissed General Manager Joe Douglas, marking another significant change for the franchise as they approach the 2025 NFL season. This follows the earlier firing of head coach Robert Saleh. The Jets made the announcement on Tuesday, sharing a statement from owner Woody Johnson.
“Today, I informed Joe Douglas that he will no longer be the General Manager of the New York Jets. I want to thank Joe for his dedication to the team over the past six years and wish him and his family the best going forward,” said Johnson.
Johnson also revealed that senior football adviser Phil Savage will take over as interim GM while the team searches for a permanent replacement.
Douglas’ firing comes after a painful loss to the Indianapolis Colts, which dropped the Jets to a 3-8 record and effectively ended their hopes for a playoff spot, extending their postseason drought to 14 seasons.
Hired in 2019 from the Philadelphia Eagles, Douglas was expected to rebuild the struggling Jets and set them up for long-term success. However, his tenure saw no winning seasons, with a 30-64 overall record. Douglas faced criticism for failing to secure a franchise quarterback and for delaying the resolution of the offensive line issues. Nonetheless, he did make some successful moves, such as drafting standout wide receiver Garrett Wilson and All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner.
