Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes did not hold back after being told by a club legend to “take more responsibility” in his role. The comment came from former Canucks star and widely respected veteran Trevor Linden, who suggested Hughes could do more to guide the team as they aim to rebuild their identity.
Linden, known for his own leadership during his tenure with the Canucks, recently commented on the need for Hughes to “step up not only as a player but as a leader.” While Linden acknowledged Hughes’ undeniable talent on the ice, he seemed to challenge the young defenseman to take greater charge of the locker room dynamics, setting higher standards both on and off the ice.
Hughes, however, wasn’t pleased with the assessment. In a recent interview, he defended his dedication to the team and took issue with the idea that he hadn’t been fulfilling his duties as captain. “I’ve done everything that’s been asked of me and more,” Hughes responded. “I care about this team deeply, and I’m always working to make us better. I appreciate the legacy of this club, but no one knows the effort we put in better than those of us in the room every day.”
Hughes emphasized that while he values the history and contributions of players like Linden, he believes the Canucks are evolving and that he’s putting his own stamp on the captaincy. “The game has changed, and so has leadership. I lead in my own way, and I’m confident in that,” he added.
While fans have shown divided reactions, some supporting Linden’s call for traditional leadership and others backing Hughes’ response, the exchange has sparked renewed conversations about the direction of the Canucks under Hughes’ captaincy. For now, all eyes remain on Hughes as he looks to rally his team and prove his leadership on his own terms.
