The Calgary Flames are set to honor the late Bill Hay, a legend in the hockey world, with a special tribute at their home ground, the Scotiabank Saddledome. Hay, who passed away last week at the age of 87, left an indelible mark on Canadian hockey, both as a player and a significant executive in the sport. Known as the “Golden Hawk,” Hay’s impact spanned decades, leaving a legacy that the Flames and the hockey community are eager to celebrate.
The organization plans to make key changes to the Saddledome in honor of Hay, who was the first Calgary-born player to make it to the NHL, playing for the Chicago Blackhawks from 1959 to 1967. His legacy extended beyond the ice as he took on leadership roles, including serving as the chairman of the Hockey Hall of Fame and president of Hockey Canada. Hay’s contributions have earned him a revered place in Canadian sports history.
The Saddledome will feature a new memorial wall dedicated to Hay’s achievements, highlighting his time as a player, executive, and advocate for Canadian hockey. Additionally, his iconic number 18 will be displayed prominently within the arena, with plans to showcase memorabilia and photos capturing the milestones of his career.
The Flames also announced that a commemorative ceremony will be held at the season opener, giving fans a chance to pay their respects. Players will wear a special patch bearing Hay’s initials, and a moment of silence will precede the game, allowing fans, players, and staff to reflect on his legacy.
Hay’s family expressed gratitude for the recognition, saying, “Bill was deeply proud of his Calgary roots and would be honored to be remembered in the city that shaped his life.” This tribute at the Saddledome stands as a fitting homage to Bill Hay’s lifelong dedication to hockey and his pioneering spirit in Canadian sports.
