Zak Hardaker, one of rugby league’s most talented but controversial players, has secured a four-year contract with Wigan Warriors, despite serving a 14-month ban for drunk driving. The former England full-back’s career has been marred by off-field issues, but Wigan’s decision signals their confidence in Hardaker’s ability to turn a corner.
The 27-year-old, once a key figure at Leeds Rhinos, tested positive for cocaine in 2017, leading to his suspension from the sport. During his ban, Hardaker worked hard to rehabilitate himself both personally and professionally, acknowledging his mistakes and focusing on regaining form. Wigan’s interest in him grew as they monitored his progress, and they were convinced he could still make an impact.
Wigan’s chairman, Ian Lenagan, said, “We’ve all seen what Zak can do on the field, and we believe he’s a player worth investing in. He’s made mistakes, but he’s shown real determination to bounce back. We’re confident this will be a new chapter for him.”
Hardaker, who is set to return to action in the 2019 season, expressed his gratitude for the club’s faith in him. “I’m really thankful to Wigan for giving me this opportunity. I’ve learned a lot over the past year and I’m committed to repaying their trust. I can’t wait to get back out on the pitch and contribute to the team.”
Despite the controversy surrounding the deal, many Wigan fans are optimistic about Hardaker’s potential to elevate the squad. Others remain skeptical, unsure if he can maintain his discipline off the field. Only time will tell if Hardaker can make the most of his second chance and reestablish himself as one of the sport’s brightest stars.
