Wellington Phoenix defender Tim Payne has publicly apologized following a drink-driving incident involving a golf cart during the team’s A-League lockdown camp in March 2020. The incident occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic when the team was stationed in New South Wales, Australia, to continue training and maintain fitness while the league was suspended.
Reports surfaced that Payne and his teammate, Oliver Sail, had taken a golf cart without permission and were caught driving it while under the influence of alcohol late at night. Payne, the 26-year-old New Zealand international, was arrested and charged with drink driving, which shocked both fans and the Phoenix organization.
In a heartfelt statement, Payne expressed deep remorse for his actions. “I want to sincerely apologize to my teammates, coaches, and fans for my reckless behavior. I take full responsibility for my actions that night, and I understand the consequences that follow. I let a lot of people down, and for that, I am deeply sorry,” Payne said.
The Wellington Phoenix organization condemned the behavior but stood by Payne, acknowledging his apology and willingness to make amends. Head coach Ufuk Talay expressed disappointment but affirmed the club’s commitment to helping Payne grow from the incident. “We’re all human and make mistakes, but it’s how we learn from them that matters. Tim knows he made a serious error in judgment, and we are supporting him through the process.”
Since the incident, Payne has faced sanctions, including fines, a suspension, and a mandatory educational program on responsible drinking. His apology marked a step toward rebuilding trust with the club and its supporters, as he focuses on regaining his form and continuing his football career.
