A Lightning lifer? Defenseman Victor Hedman signs 4-year extension

In a move that solidifies his commitment to the franchise, defenseman Victor Hedman has signed a four-year contract extension with the Tampa Bay Lightning, ensuring he remains a cornerstone of the team through the 2027-28 season. The deal, reportedly worth $34 million, reflects Hedman’s integral role in the Lightning’s success over the past decade.

Hedman, who was drafted second overall by Tampa Bay in 2009, has evolved into one of the premier defensemen in the NHL. His blend of size, skill, and intelligence on the ice has earned him accolades, including the prestigious Norris Trophy in 2018 as the league’s top defenseman. As a key figure in the Lightning’s back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2020 and 2021, Hedman’s experience and leadership have been vital in navigating the team through both triumphs and challenges.

“This is where I want to be,” Hedman said during a press conference announcing the extension. “I’ve spent my entire career here, and I can’t imagine playing anywhere else. The Lightning organization feels like family to me.”

The extension comes at a crucial time as the Lightning look to rebound from a disappointing playoff exit last season. With Hedman anchoring the blue line, Tampa Bay aims to reclaim its status as a contender in the competitive Eastern Conference.

General Manager Julien BriseBois expressed his enthusiasm for the deal, stating, “Victor embodies what it means to be a Lightning player. His talent, work ethic, and dedication are unmatched, and we are thrilled to have him with us for the next four years.”

With Hedman’s extension, the Lightning have reinforced their commitment to building a championship-caliber team while keeping their star players in place. As fans look forward to the upcoming season, Hedman’s presence is sure to instill confidence in the team’s pursuit of another title.
