Houston Texans quarterback Case Keenum has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with his current role as backup to rookie sensation C.J. Stroud. While Stroud has garnered plenty of attention and praise as the Texans’ future, Keenum, a seasoned veteran with years of NFL experience, isn’t content with simply holding a clipboard on the sidelines.
“I’ve been in this league for a long time, and I still feel like I have a lot to offer on the field,” Keenum said in a recent interview. “I respect what C.J. brings to the team, but at the same time, I’ve worked hard to be here, and I want to contribute in a bigger way. Sitting on the bench isn’t something I’m comfortable with.”
Keenum’s frustration isn’t surprising. As someone who has led teams like the Minnesota Vikings to playoff success and carved out a reputation as a reliable and capable quarterback, Keenum likely envisioned a larger role when signing with Houston. His leadership, deep knowledge of the game, and ability to step in when needed are qualities that make him a valuable asset to any team.
Head coach DeMeco Ryans, however, has stood by his decision to prioritize Stroud as the starter, stating, “C.J. is our guy moving forward. Case is a great mentor, but we believe C.J. gives us the best chance to win.”
While Keenum remains a consummate professional, his desire for more playing time could lead to tension within the organization, possibly sparking trade talks or internal discussions about his future with the Texans.
