Michigan Wolverines coach Sherrone Moore not happy with star QB over his “risky” style of playing

Michigan Wolverines offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Sherrone Moore recently expressed concern over the playstyle of his star quarterback, J.J. McCarthy, calling it “risky.” While Moore acknowledged McCarthy’s exceptional talent and athleticism, he emphasized the need for the young QB to find a better balance between making big plays and ensuring his safety.

McCarthy, known for his willingness to extend plays with his legs and make daring throws, has garnered attention for his electrifying performances. However, Moore believes this aggressive style could lead to unnecessary risks for both McCarthy and the team.

“J.J. has the potential to be one of the best quarterbacks in college football, no doubt about that,” Moore said during a recent press conference. “But we’ve had some conversations about protecting himself and making smarter decisions. It’s great when those high-risk plays pay off, but you don’t want to be in a position where one mistake changes the whole game.”

The concern comes as the Wolverines prepare for a crucial stretch in their season, with high hopes of securing a Big Ten title and competing for a national championship. McCarthy’s ability to take care of the football and avoid injury will be pivotal in achieving those goals.

“He’s got the heart of a lion, and we love that about him,” Moore added. “But there are times when you have to know when to throw the ball away or slide. We want him on the field, healthy, and playing his best football.”

McCarthy, on his part, has acknowledged Moore’s advice and has vowed to find the right balance. “I understand where Coach Moore is coming from, and I know I need to be smarter in certain situations,” McCarthy commented. “But I’ll never lose that competitive edge.”

As Michigan’s season continues, fans will watch closely to see if McCarthy can temper his aggression without losing his dynamic playmaking ability.
