ECU Pirates head coach Mike Houston was visibly upset following a recent practice, voicing his frustration over the playing style of star quarterback Mason Garcia. The young QB has been making waves with his bold, sometimes reckless, approach on the field, but Houston made it clear that there are limits to how much risk he’s willing to accept.
“Mason’s got all the talent in the world,” Houston said during a post-practice interview, his tone stern. “He’s got the arm, the mobility, the vision, but he’s pushing the envelope too far with some of these decisions. We can’t afford to be that risky, especially with the season we’ve got ahead.”
Garcia’s ability to scramble and extend plays has drawn praise from fans and analysts alike, with some even comparing him to NFL dual-threat quarterbacks. However, his tendency to force throws into tight coverage and take unnecessary hits when running the ball has raised concerns about his long-term durability and the overall health of the offense.
“We’ve got too much riding on this season to be taking those kinds of chances,” Houston continued. “I get it — he’s trying to make plays, and I respect that. But at the same time, we need to play smart football. We’ve got talented receivers, a solid O-line, and a game plan designed to minimize risk. He’s got to trust that.”
Garcia, for his part, responded to the coach’s criticism with maturity, acknowledging the need for adjustments. “I know Coach is looking out for me and the team,” Garcia said. “I’ve got to be more careful. I’m not here just to make highlights; I’m here to win games and help the team get better.”
With the Pirates’ season fast approaching, all eyes will be on Garcia to see how he balances his dynamic playmaking ability with a more calculated approach.
