Auburn Tigers head coach Hugh Freeze has voiced his concern over his star quarterback’s tendency to play with a risky, aggressive style on the field. While the talent and competitiveness of the QB have been undeniable, Freeze believes it’s time to fine-tune the decision-making process to ensure long-term success for both the player and the team.
During a recent press conference, Freeze didn’t hold back when asked about the quarterback’s performance. “He’s got incredible ability,” Freeze acknowledged. “But some of the decisions he makes out there — whether it’s forcing a throw into double coverage or trying to extend a play that’s dead — it’s too risky. And those kinds of plays can hurt us.”
The coach was quick to emphasize that the player’s mentality comes from a place of wanting to win at all costs, but Freeze is looking to instill a balance between aggression and smart play. “I don’t want to take away his fire, his competitiveness. That’s what makes him special. But there’s a fine line between being a playmaker and making mistakes that could cost the team. He needs to learn when to take those risks and when to be more conservative.”
Freeze also expressed that teaching the quarterback to trust his teammates is part of the solution. “He doesn’t always have to do it all himself. We have other guys who can make plays too.”
As Auburn looks forward to their upcoming season, it’s clear that Freeze’s priority will be helping his star QB refine his approach, turning him into a more efficient and calculated leader on the field. For now, the coach hopes that a blend of discipline and natural talent will lead the Tigers to success this year.
