In a recent candid interview, East Carolina University (ECU) head football coach Mike Houston revealed one of his biggest recruiting regrets from his early tenure with the Pirates. Reflecting on his first year at ECU, Houston admitted there was one player he wished he had pursued more aggressively: local standout and current star wide receiver, Jaquan Greene.
“I look back now and think, ‘How did we miss that one?’” Houston shared. “Jaquan was right in our backyard, a proven talent, but we didn’t move on him as quickly as we should have. It’s one of those things you kick yourself for in hindsight.”
Jaquan Greene, a Greenville native, was a hot prospect coming out of high school. Despite receiving interest from ECU, he ultimately committed to another program, where he has since flourished. His dynamic playmaking ability, speed, and agility have made him a household name in college football, and his impressive stats only further underline the missed opportunity for Houston and his coaching staff.
Houston explained that part of the challenge was the transition period when he took over the program. “We were trying to establish a culture and really get our bearings. Unfortunately, that meant some recruiting decisions didn’t pan out the way we hoped,” he said. “But when you see a player like Jaquan develop the way he has, you can’t help but think about what could have been.”
Though Houston’s regret is palpable, he remains focused on the future. “There’s always going to be players you miss, but the key is learning from it. You’ve got to make sure the next Jaquan Greene doesn’t slip through your fingers,” he concluded, emphasizing his commitment to locking down local talent moving forward.
As ECU continues to grow under Houston’s leadership, the lessons learned from past recruiting decisions will undoubtedly shape the team’s future success.
