Texas Tech’s promising edge rusher sidelined for the 2024 season due to injury
Sophomore outside linebacker Dylan Spencer is set to miss the entire 2024 season following an injury, as confirmed by Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire.
The Texas Tech football team faces a tough setback with the news that Dylan Spencer will not play this season due to injury. Coach Joey McGuire announced this unfortunate development after the team’s first scrimmage of fall camp, revealing that Spencer suffered a knee injury during non-contact drills.
“Dylan Spencer is out for the year,” McGuire stated. “It happened in practice—maybe the first or second day. It’s concerning when it occurs in a non-contact setting.”
This injury is particularly disappointing for the Red Raiders, as Spencer, a sophomore, was considered a highly regarded recruit when he joined the program. In the 2023 recruiting class, the Houston native was a four-star prospect according to the 247Sports composite rankings, ranked as the 43rd defensive lineman nationally and 58th in Texas.
Spencer had an impressive list of offers from schools like Arizona State, Baylor, Houston, LSU, SMU, Texas A&M, and USC. At one point, he was even committed to the Texas Longhorns.
Expectations were high for Spencer entering this season, especially after he played in eight games last year and was the second-string edge rusher behind senior Myles Cole, recording four tackles over 84 snaps. Now, the 6-foot-5, 245-pound player will be sidelined for at least a year, leaving the team to search for alternatives in their pass-rushing strategy.
