Liberty Flames Smith Named CUSA Offensive Player of the Week

On September 23, 2024, Liberty’s Reese Smith was honored as the CUSA Offensive Player of the Week after matching a school record and leading the Flames to a late-night win.

Smith’s standout performance energized the team after a nearly five-hour weather delay. The Flames staged a comeback from a 17-0 deficit to secure a 35-24 victory against East Carolina, with the game concluding at 2 a.m. on Sunday.

The wide receiver shined with three touchdown receptions, tying the program’s record for most touchdowns in a single game. This achievement made him the 13th player in Liberty’s history to accomplish three receiving touchdowns in a game.

His second and third touchdowns were crucial in helping Liberty reclaim the lead, with a 15-yard touchdown reception at 8:10 in the fourth quarter that put the Flames ahead for good.

Smith is in his second season with Liberty after transferring from West Virginia, although this is his first season playing, as he missed the entire 2023 season due to injury. During his 33 games at West Virginia from 2020 to 2022, he recorded a total of two touchdowns.

Hailing from Danville, Kentucky, Smith currently shares the lead in Conference USA for receiving touchdowns and ranks 30th nationally in that category.

He is the third Liberty player to receive recognition from Conference USA this season. After another late-night victory over New Mexico State, defensive end CJ Bazile, Jr. was named the CUSA Defensive Player of the Week, and kicker Colin Karhu earned the title of Special Teams Player of the Week.
