In a heartbreaking blow to the South Florida Bulls, quarterback Gerry Bohanon has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a shoulder injury. The senior QB, who transferred to USF from Baylor in 2022, had high hopes of leading the Bulls to a successful season in his final collegiate year. Unfortunately, Bohanon’s season has been cut short, leaving a significant void in the Bulls’ offensive unit.
The injury occurred during a Week 7 matchup when Bohanon took a hard hit to his throwing shoulder. Despite his attempt to play through the pain, it became evident that the injury was more severe than initially thought. Subsequent medical evaluations confirmed a torn labrum, requiring season-ending surgery.
Head coach Alex Golesh expressed his disappointment, both for the team and for Bohanon personally. “Gerry is a true leader on and off the field. He gave his all for this team, and it’s devastating to lose him like this. We’re going to rally behind him and do everything we can to support his recovery.”
Bohanon’s absence leaves a massive challenge for the Bulls, who will now turn to sophomore backup Byrum Brown. Brown, though talented, lacks the experience of Bohanon, which could lead to growing pains as he steps into the starting role.
For Bohanon, this injury marks an unfortunate end to what was expected to be a defining season. Known for his dual-threat abilities, Bohanon had thrown for over 1,400 yards and rushed for 386 more, accounting for a significant portion of the team’s offense. As he faces surgery and rehab, the question remains whether he will declare for the NFL Draft or seek a medical redshirt for one more year of eligibility.
As the Bulls move forward without Bohanon, his presence will be missed both on the field and in the locker room.
