Shane Steichen confirms the suspension of QB Anthony Richardson over disciplinary issues

Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen confirmed today that rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson has been suspended due to disciplinary issues. The announcement came during a press conference, where Steichen addressed rumors that had been circulating about Richardson’s status with the team.

“Anthony violated team rules, and as a result, we’ve made the decision to suspend him,” Steichen stated. “We hold all of our players to high standards, both on and off the field. Discipline is a key part of being a professional athlete, and this decision reflects that.”

Richardson, who was drafted in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, has been a focal point of the Colts’ plans for the future. His dynamic athleticism and strong arm have impressed during training camps and early preseason games. However, this setback signals that there are still areas of maturity and professionalism that need to be addressed.

When asked about the specifics of the violation, Steichen declined to provide details, saying, “It’s an internal matter, and we’ll handle it as a team. The important thing is that Anthony learns from this and grows. We believe he has a bright future ahead of him, but growth sometimes comes with hard lessons.”

Richardson, in a statement released through the Colts, expressed remorse for his actions. “I made a mistake, and I take full responsibility for it. I apologize to my teammates, coaches, and the organization. I’ll use this time to reflect and come back stronger.”

The length of the suspension has not been disclosed, but Steichen assured fans that Richardson would have the opportunity to rejoin the team once he has met the expectations set by the organization. The Colts remain hopeful that this incident will serve as a valuable learning experience for their young quarterback.
