For the first time under Lincoln Riley, USC has overcome a problem that has plagued the team for a long time

For the first time since Lincoln Riley took over as head coach of the USC Trojans, the team has finally overcome a long-standing issue that has hindered their success for years: a leaky and inconsistent defense. In past seasons, even with explosive offenses, USC struggled to contain opponents, often losing high-scoring games because of their inability to stop key drives. However, in the 2024 season, the Trojans’ defense has shown significant improvement, making them a more complete and dangerous team.

The defensive turnaround is the result of a focused effort by Riley and his coaching staff, particularly defensive coordinator Alex Grinch. Recognizing the defense as the team’s Achilles’ heel, Riley made it a priority to bring in talented recruits and transfers, while also emphasizing tougher, more disciplined defensive schemes. The results are now evident on the field, with USC’s defense showing a newfound ability to pressure quarterbacks, stop the run, and create turnovers.

“Our defense was something we needed to fix, and we’ve finally turned the corner,” Riley stated. “The guys have been working hard, and we’re seeing the results of that effort. It’s a big step forward for this team.”

The defense’s progress has allowed USC to stay in control of games, complementing their high-powered offense led by Caleb Williams. No longer needing to rely solely on outscoring opponents, the Trojans can now close out tight games and maintain leads with confidence.

Players like defensive end Bear Alexander and linebacker Mason Cobb have emerged as key contributors, bringing physicality and leadership to the unit. USC’s ability to keep opponents under pressure and limit big plays has been a game-changer this season.

With a balanced team on both sides of the ball, the Trojans look poised to make a serious run at the College Football Playoff, leaving behind a defensive weakness that once held them back.
