In a surprising turn of events, Springfield Thunderbirds forward, Lucas Mercer, has reportedly declined a lucrative new contract extension from the team, fueling rumors of his desire to leave the organization. Mercer, a standout player for the Thunderbirds over the past three seasons, has become a fan favorite thanks to his consistent performances and leadership on the ice. However, sources close to the player suggest he is seeking new challenges beyond Springfield.
The 28-year-old forward has been instrumental in the Thunderbirds’ recent success, helping the team reach the playoffs in consecutive seasons. Despite the club’s attempt to retain him with a multi-year contract worth a reported $3 million annually, Mercer’s focus appears to be on securing a move to a different franchise.
Speaking to reporters, Mercer hinted at his future ambitions, saying, “I’ve loved my time in Springfield, and it’s a great organization, but sometimes, for a player to grow, they need a change of scenery. I’ve got my sights set on new goals, and I believe a fresh start somewhere else is the best step for me at this point in my career.”
Thunderbirds’ General Manager, John Stevens, expressed disappointment but acknowledged Mercer’s decision. “Lucas has been a key player for us, both on and off the ice. We made a strong offer, but we respect his decision to explore other opportunities,” Stevens said.
With several AHL teams and potentially even NHL franchises eyeing the talented forward, Mercer’s next move will be closely watched in the coming weeks. His departure leaves a significant gap in the Thunderbirds’ roster, one that the team will need to address swiftly before the start of the upcoming season.
