This week, the Houston Texans made a significant move by placing Jeff Okudah, the former third-overall pick from the 2020 NFL Draft, on the injured reserve list. This decision, while not surprising given Okudah’s frequent injuries and inconsistent performance as a cornerback, opens up space for other players. In addition to this move, the Texans have re-signed Desmond King to their practice squad.
King was a valuable defensive player for the Texans in the 2023 season but did not make the main roster this year, partly due to the presence of Okudah and rookie Kamari Lassiter. Despite being re-signed to the practice squad, King is still awaiting another chance to join the active roster. In the meantime, the Texans have added Rashad Weaver, a former fourth-round pick, to their squad.
Weaver, who was selected by the Tennessee Titans in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, had a modest rookie season with minimal impact. His second year saw some improvement with 5.5 sacks and a Pro Football Focus grade of 60.6. However, his performance declined sharply in 2023, where he played significantly fewer snaps and had little impact, leading to his release by the Titans.
The Texans have initially placed Weaver on their practice squad, but he could be called up for their Week 2 game against the Chicago Bears on Sunday Night Football. Although it is unlikely he will be dressed for the game—since only 48 of the 53-man roster are active on game day—there is still a possibility he might make the final cut. If he does, Weaver will be expected to contribute immediately, particularly if key defensive ends like Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson Jr. are unavailable for a second week.
