The No. 10-ranked Miami Hurricanes have been a major highlight of the college football season, largely thanks to standout transfer quarterback Cam Ward. Miami has impressed with dominant victories over Florida and Florida A&M, outscoring opponents 97-26. Ward has been exceptional, amassing 689 yards and six touchdowns, ranking sixth and eighth in the NCAA for those stats, respectively. However, whether Miami is truly a national championship contender or just benefiting from a relatively easy schedule will be clearer in six weeks when they face in-state rival Florida State on October 26.
Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt suggested that this matchup will provide a better gauge of Miami’s legitimacy. On “The Joel Klatt Show,” Klatt remarked, “Determining if Miami is the real deal will be more challenging given their current schedule, which lacks strong opponents aside from Louisville, a road game. The real test will come against Florida State. Despite Florida State’s 0-2 start and unimpressive performances, they boast a $12 million roster and were undefeated last year. Most importantly, it’s a rivalry game, and Florida State will be highly motivated to compete. If Miami can handle their rival, then we’ll know they’re genuine.”
Miami’s upcoming schedule includes two manageable games against Ball State and South Florida, followed by tougher contests against Virginia Tech and California. The game against No. 19 Louisville on October 19 will be a significant challenge. Louisville has performed well so far, and they will face tough opponents, including Georgia Tech and No. 18 Notre Dame, before meeting Miami. Under head coach Mario Cristobal, Miami has struggled against ranked teams, holding a 1-5 record, including a 38-31 loss to then-No. 10 Louisville last season. Additionally, Miami has not defeated Florida State under Cristobal, suffering a 27-20 loss last year and a 45-3 defeat in 2022.
