As the USC Trojans prepare for the 2024 football season, linebacker Eric Gentry is brimming with optimism about the team’s prospects. Gentry, who has been a standout on the Trojans’ defense, believes that the changes implemented during the offseason will transform USC into a dominant force in college football. His enthusiasm is particularly fueled by the new defensive scheme that head coach Lincoln Riley and his coaching staff have introduced.

“There’s a different energy this year,” Gentry said during a recent interview. “Coach Riley and our new defensive coordinator have really put together a system that fits our strengths. We’re more aggressive, and there’s a lot more emphasis on creating turnovers and pressuring the quarterback. I feel like this is the defense we’ve been waiting for.”

The Trojans’ defense, which struggled at times in previous seasons, has undergone a significant overhaul. The addition of a new defensive coordinator, known for his innovative and aggressive strategies, has injected new life into the unit. Gentry highlighted how the coaching staff has focused on fundamentals, ensuring that every player knows their role and can execute it with precision.

“We’re simplifying things, but at the same time, we’re being more aggressive,” Gentry explained. “The coaches have done a great job of putting us in positions to succeed. We’ve been working on our communication and making sure everyone is on the same page. It’s a night-and-day difference from where we were last year.”

With a renewed sense of purpose and a revamped defensive strategy, Gentry and the Trojans are eager to showcase their improvements. The 2024 season holds great promise for USC, and Gentry is confident that the defense will be a key factor in the team’s success. “We’re ready to prove ourselves,” he said. “This is our year.”
