Zaven Collins, a prominent linebacker for the Arizona Cardinals, finds himself in a precarious position as the 2024 NFL season approaches. Once considered a cornerstone of the Cardinals’ defensive future, Collins now faces uncertainty due to new head coach Jonathan Gannon’s evolving preferences for the team’s defensive lineup.
Gannon, who joined the Cardinals from the Philadelphia Eagles, brings with him a dynamic defensive philosophy. Known for his adaptability and inclination to maximize versatility on the field, Gannon’s system emphasizes speed and flexibility. This shift has led to a growing interest in players who can quickly adapt to multiple roles within the defense, potentially sidelining more traditional linebackers like Collins.
Reports from training camp suggest that Gannon is leaning towards a new lineup, favoring linebackers who are more hybrid and better suited to covering the pass, rushing the quarterback, and defending against the run. This preference has made things more competitive in the linebacker room, with Collins’ starting role now in jeopardy. Veteran linebacker Kyzir White and rookie standout BJ Ojulari are increasingly being seen as key components in Gannon’s defensive scheme.
While Collins’ physical presence and talent are undeniable, questions have arisen about his ability to adapt to a more fluid role in Gannon’s defense. The 6’4″, 260-pound linebacker has excelled at stopping the run, but his pass coverage skills and speed in lateral movement have been put under the microscope. Some within the organization are concerned that Collins may not fit Gannon’s vision of a more versatile and reactive defensive unit.
Despite the challenges, Collins remains confident in his abilities. “I’ve faced adversity before, and I’ll face it again,” Collins said in a recent interview. “I’m here to compete, learn, and do whatever it takes to help this team win.”
As the Cardinals’ preseason unfolds, all eyes will be on Collins to see if he can adapt and reclaim his spot, or if Gannon’s new defensive direction will leave him on the sidelines.
