Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham has selected Sam Leavitt as the starting quarterback for the upcoming season opener against Wyoming on August 31. Leavitt secured the position over Jeff Sims, who transferred from Nebraska, after a strong showing during fall practices. Dillingham highlighted Leavitt’s impressive performance, noting that in 300 team scenarios, Leavitt threw only two interceptions—equivalent to about five games’ worth of plays.
Leavitt has been favored for the role since Sims joined the team, consistently performing better in practice and building strong chemistry with receivers like Malik McClain and Jordyn Tyson. Offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo praised Leavitt’s dedication and work ethic, emphasizing his attention to detail and willingness to put in extra effort.
Leavitt transferred to Arizona State from Michigan State, where he had limited playing time as a freshman. He chose to transfer after Jaden Rashada, last year’s starter, dealt with injuries and later transferred to Georgia. Leavitt had a successful high school career in Oregon, leading his team to a state championship and earning a four-star rating from 247 Sports.
Dillingham expressed confidence in Leavitt’s abilities, recalling his recruitment of Sims and making it clear that Leavitt would be a formidable competitor for the starting job. Leavitt’s freshman season at Michigan State included a game-winning touchdown pass against Nebraska before he decided to redshirt the remainder of the season.
