Five-star defender Jonah Williams kept his Texas commitment a secret – even from coach Steve Sarkisian

Galveston (Texas) Ball five-star safety Jonah Williams has committed to the University of Texas. Before making his decision, he spoke in-depth with 247Sports about his choice.

When Jonah Williams, a five-star safety from Galveston (Texas) Ball, publicly committed to the University of Texas on Saturday evening, it was the first time Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian learned of the news. While there were some behind-the-scenes hints and the Texas staff felt confident, Williams chose to keep the good news to himself until his live announcement.

Ranked as the No. 7 overall player in the 2025 class, Williams picked Texas over numerous offers from top programs across the country. His final choices included Texas, LSU, Texas A&M, Oregon, and USC. In the end, despite considering all five schools, he decided to stay in Texas and play for Sarkisian and safeties coach Blake Gideon.

“Texas,” Williams revealed when asked where he was heading in an interview with 247Sports early Saturday morning. “It was the coaching staff, the atmosphere, and the life after football part. It was just too good of an opportunity to pass up. Just in case football ends early, you have to think about what’s next.”
