Xavier Bell reveals his plans for the Shockers as he enters the last season with the team

Xavier Bell had the best statistical season of his college basketball career last year, averaging career highs of 11.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.1 steals in 30.2 minutes per game for Wichita State. However, despite his personal achievements, Bell does not consider the season a success, as the team finished with a disappointing 15-19 record. Now entering his final season with the Shockers, the Wichita native is focused on one thing: winning.

“I know what winning basketball looks like at Wichita State, and I want to help this program return to that level,” Bell said. “Whether it’s coming off the bench or playing a specific role, I’m committed to doing whatever the team needs to succeed.”

As one of the more experienced players on the team, Bell’s leadership has naturally evolved. While he was a key voice in the locker room last season, this year brings a new dynamic with the addition of several seasoned players, including Justin Hill, A.J. McGinnis, Zane Meeks, and Corey Washington. Bell has embraced a more assertive leadership role, aiming to be both commanding and confident while contributing to what he hopes will be a special season for the Shockers.

Throughout last season, Bell’s ability to score in the paint was a consistent asset for Wichita State, but opposing defenses eventually adjusted, limiting his scoring opportunities. This summer, Bell has worked diligently to improve his outside shooting and better understand how to utilize spacing to his advantage. WSU head coach Paul Mills has noted Bell’s progress, particularly in terms of his shooting consistency, which Bell will need to demonstrate throughout the upcoming season.
