Vanessa Morgan referred to her divorce from ex-husband Michael Kopech as the “biggest blessing” of her life.
“In the moment, it’s incredibly painful. It’s almost like we idolize the dream reality we envisioned as kids,” Morgan, 31, shared during Rachel Bilson’s “Broad Ideas” podcast on Monday, March 11. “You grieve the future that never came to be. You mourn the fantasy you created, but it wasn’t the reality that was best for me.”
She added, “God saved me. I can only see the bigger picture now. I endured two years of pain.”
Morgan married Kopech, 27, in January 2020. The last time she posted about him was in April of that year. In July 2020, she announced via social media that she was expecting a baby boy, notably omitting Kopech’s name. Days later, the Chicago Tribune reported that Kopech had filed for divorce the previous month. A rep confirmed Kopech as the father of Morgan’s son, River, born in January 2021.
Discussing the breakup during the podcast, Morgan acknowledged the embarrassment of having a “broken family.” She said, “When you get married, you have that fantasy, and it’s disappointing to admit that it didn’t work out. But that’s the beauty of life; it doesn’t always go as planned, and it’s about the journey.”
Morgan emphasized that she refuses to adopt a “victim mentality” regarding her past relationship. “I don’t want to be a victim. Otherwise, I’d feel bad for myself all the time, and I didn’t want that. I have a beautiful son—that’s my blessing.”
Addressing the rumors surrounding her and Kopech’s split, Morgan explained she “chose to stay silent” for her and her son’s peace. “Feeding into gossip only makes things worse. I thought staying silent was the best choice for me and my family. I don’t want my son to grow up seeing the truth.”
Kopech has since moved on with Morgan Eudy, with whom he welcomed a son, Vander, in May 2022. Regarding Kopech’s relationship with River, Morgan mentioned that she primarily cares for their son. “His father is in his life, but he doesn’t see him often. At least my current partner has been there for River since the beginning.”
Morgan is now in a relationship with James Karnik, whom she has been dating since 2022. She waited six months before introducing her son to Karnik, 33, but says they now have a great relationship. “They’re together every day,” Morgan said, adding that River sees Karnik as a father figure.
