Los Angeles Rams find themselves in a ‘difficult situation’ as star QB faces fitness problems

Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay is confident that quarterback Matthew Stafford will be ready to play in the team’s season opener against Detroit.

Stafford exited a joint practice with the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday due to hamstring tightness. While it’s unclear how much he’ll be able to practice this week, McVay isn’t concerned about Stafford’s availability for the September 8 game against the Lions.

“If we miss a couple of days this week, if we decide to play it safe, he’ll still have 2 1/2 weeks to prepare for Detroit,” McVay said during a video call on Sunday.

The Rams have practices scheduled for Monday and Tuesday at California Lutheran University before traveling to Houston for a joint session with the Texans on Thursday. The Rams will wrap up their preseason with a game against the Texans on Saturday.

Last season, the 36-year-old Stafford threw for 3,965 yards and 24 touchdowns with 11 interceptions in 15 games, helping the Rams return to the playoffs after missing them in 2022.
