Houston Texans running back Cam Akers is facing a pivotal preseason in his career. After enduring two Achilles injuries, Akers is eager to make a comeback following his time with the Los Angeles Rams, his original team, and the Minnesota Vikings.
At 25, Akers has a significant opportunity to secure the Texans’ backup running back role. Dameon Pierce’s lackluster performance last season presents Akers with a chance to rejuvenate his once-promising career.
Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik praised Akers, noting that the Florida State alum has quickly adapted during preseason and training camp.
“It’s clear that Cam [Akers] is familiar with the outside zone scheme from his time in L.A. and Minnesota, which closely aligns with what we do here,” Slowik said. “We don’t need to spend much time explaining how to run the zone.”
Akers’ familiarity with the scheme allows him to hit the ground running as he vies for a spot on the 53-man roster and a place in the running back rotation. While it hasn’t been flawless, Akers has made a strong impression early on.
“We’ve had to cover other run schemes like gap, but he’s eager to learn it all,” Slowik added. “He’s always asking questions and wants to ensure he’s doing the right thing. He’s committed to helping us in any way he can.”
Beyond his knowledge of the scheme, Akers’ determination has caught the attention of both head coach DeMeco Ryans and Slowik. With the team needing a reliable backup to Joe Mixon, Akers’ dependability might be what earns him the role.
Slowik also commented on Akers’ explosiveness, emphasizing his reliability.
“You can see it in these preseason games,” Slowik said. “He’s made plays, evaded defenders in space, and has been in the right spots with almost no mental errors. He’s extremely reliable.”
The battle for the RB2 position will be one to watch, but whether it’s Akers or Pierce, the Texans’ offense, led by C.J. Stroud and a talented wide receiver group, is poised to be elite.
