Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jake Matthews was left in shock after learning of Coach Mike McDaniel’s decision to place him on the practice squad instead of the active roster. Matthews, who had been fighting for a spot throughout training camp, received the news just before the final preseason game.
As the news sank in, Matthews sat quietly in the locker room, surrounded by teammates who could see the disappointment on his face. “I gave everything I had out there,” Matthews muttered, shaking his head. “I just don’t get it.”
Coach McDaniel, known for his straightforward approach, later spoke with Matthews privately. “Jake, I want you to know this was one of the toughest decisions I’ve had to make,” McDaniel said, placing a reassuring hand on Matthews’ shoulder. “You’ve shown tremendous growth, and this isn’t the end. It’s just another step in your journey.”
Despite the coach’s encouraging words, Matthews struggled to hide his disappointment. “I understand, Coach, but it’s hard not to feel like I’ve let myself down,” he replied, his voice tinged with frustration.
McDaniel emphasized the importance of staying ready and focused. “You’ve got the talent, Jake. Keep working hard, and your time will come. I have no doubt about that.”
As Matthews left the facility that day, he knew the road ahead wouldn’t be easy, but he resolved to keep fighting for his chance to make an impact on the Dolphins’ roster.
