Racing legend makes a u-turn after initially returning to NASCAR after a 10-year absence

A familiar face will be back behind the wheel when the NASCAR Cup Series returns to Watkins Glen International on September 15.

Juan Pablo Montoya is set to make his NASCAR comeback, driving the No. 50 Mobil 1 Toyota car to celebrate Mobil 1’s 50th anniversary

Montoya, now 48, last competed in the Cup Series in 2014 with Team Penske.

After teasing the announcement on social media on Thursday, 23XI Racing, co-owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin, officially confirmed it on Friday, August 2.

“I’m excited for the opportunity and I think we’re going to be pretty well prepared,” Montoya said in a video. “I want to do it and I think I can be quite competitive at it. … I think I’ve done enough laps around Watkins Glen and everything that it should be pretty good.”

With two career Cup Series wins, a NASCAR Xfinity Series win, seven Formula One wins, and 15 IndyCar victories, Montoya brings an impressive resume to his return at The Glen.
