Oregon Duck fans are familiar with rumors linking their head coach to other programs, with past instances including Willie Taggart’s move to Florida State and Mario Cristobal’s departure to Miami.
Recently, speculation surrounded Dan Lanning amid openings at Auburn and Texas A&M, but these rumors faded as neither position was deemed a significant advancement for Lanning, who has found success at Oregon and has no strong ties to those schools.
However, the recent retirement of Nick Saban, who announced he is stepping down from Alabama after an illustrious career, has reignited interest in Lanning. Saban’s departure marks the first time the Alabama coaching position has been available since 2007. Saban, widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches in college football history, leaves behind a legacy of seven national championships.
Following the announcement, Lanning’s name quickly emerged as a top candidate for the Alabama job. Other potential candidates include Kalen DeBoer, Dabo Swinney, James Franklin, Mike Norvell, and Marcus Freeman. Yet, despite the interest, I believe Lanning is unlikely to move this offseason.
Lanning has previously rejected overtures from other programs, emphasizing his commitment to Oregon. “I’ve been really clear since Day 1. Everything I want exists right here,” Lanning stated in November, dismissing the Texas A&M rumors.
Oregon’s current situation is appealing: the Ducks are ranked No. 3 nationally and are strong contenders for the College Football Playoff. With a talented roster and a promising future in the Big Ten, Lanning may prefer to build his legacy at Oregon rather than take on the challenge of following Saban’s monumental success at Alabama. While Lanning may eventually seek new opportunities, it seems unlikely he will leave Eugene for Alabama in 2024.
