BYU football coach Kalani Sitake has extended his contract with the university through the 2027 season. Although specific terms of the contract were not disclosed, BYU described the deal as “unprecedented” in a statement.
Sitake has accumulated a 48-28 record over six seasons at BYU, with the team finishing No. 13 in the final College Football Playoff rankings after a 10-2 season. The Cougars are set to play UAB in the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl on December 18.
Reports indicated that Sitake had recently discussed Oregon’s head-coaching position.
BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe expressed his enthusiasm about Sitake’s continued leadership. “With much recent movement among college football head coaches, I’m delighted that Kalani will remain with us as our leader and mentor,” Holmoe said. “BYU has had only four head football coaches in the past 50 years, and Kalani’s consistency, creativity, and culture have been central to our program. He will continue to enhance our football culture and foster young leaders through his focus on ‘love and learning.’ We appreciate the Sitake family’s commitment to BYU.”
At 46, Sitake has led BYU to back-to-back seasons with 10 or more wins for the first time since 2008-2009. Since the beginning of last season, only Alabama’s Nick Saban and Cincinnati’s Luke Fickell have secured more victories than Sitake’s 21.
