UTSA, Traylor agree to contract extension through 2031

Amid a historic season for its nationally ranked football team, the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and head coach Jeff Traylor have agreed to a contract extension through 2031, worth $28 million. Traylor’s average annual salary will be $2.8 million, with potential bonuses, and the university will also increase the salary pool for assistant coaches and support staff.

“Jeff saw something special at UTSA when he first showed interest in this position, and we knew we had found someone special when we hired him,” said Lisa Campos, UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics. “He is an outstanding leader, a culture builder, and a molder of young men. He has brought unprecedented national recognition to our institution and the San Antonio community. This contract extension reflects our commitment to him and his staff to continue to build and sustain this program for years to come.”

“Jeff came to UTSA with a passion for developing a football program that San Antonio now proudly supports,” said UTSA President Taylor Eighmy. “Our team believes in him, and our students, alumni, and fans are energized by the momentum. This is a special moment. With the opening of our Roadrunner Athletics Center of Excellence and our upcoming membership in the American Athletic Conference, this is a significant waypoint on our bold path forward for our athletics program, university, and city.”

Traylor, appointed as UTSA’s third head coach on Dec. 9, 2019, has over 30 years of coaching experience, including roles at Arkansas, SMU, and Texas, as well as a successful 15-year tenure at Gilmer High School, where he won three state championships.

“I want to thank Dr. Eighmy and Dr. Campos for their commitment to what we are building here at UTSA,” said Traylor. “They engaged me early on about an extension, and my staff and I are excited about the future. This game is about the players, and their achievements this season are historic.”

Traylor’s second season with UTSA has been record-breaking, with a 15-5 record through his first 20 games, the best start in program history. Under his leadership, the Roadrunners have achieved the best overall (8-0) and conference (4-0) starts in school history, an eight-game winning streak, and significant victories, including over Illinois and Memphis.

Traylor’s debut season saw him lead UTSA to its second bowl appearance and numerous player accolades. “I am deeply grateful to Jeff and his staff for their commitment to our student-athletes, university, and city,” added Eighmy.
