Legendary former Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach Tom Osborne has recently attracted significant attention from Nebraska fans, but not for his achievements on the field.
Osborne is once again making headlines for his strong opposition to gambling in Nebraska. He is vocally against the potential legalization of online sports betting in the state.
This isn’t Osborne’s first effort to combat gambling; he has been a vocal critic of such measures before. His stance is partly why many Nebraskans have historically traveled across the Missouri River into Iowa to gamble, resulting in a loss of significant tax revenue for Nebraska.
In a recent KETV article, Osborne expressed concerns that online sports betting could be particularly harmful to young people and would lead to increased addiction and financial costs for the state.
“I see this being very dangerous, particularly for young people,” Osborne warned. “I can guarantee you there will be increased addiction and increased costs.”
Two proposed constitutional amendments on the November ballot would allow voters to decide on the issue, but Osborne is opposed to both. His position contrasts with that of Republican Governor Jim Pillen, who believes the decision should be left to the voters.
