Garrett Greene, the standout senior quarterback from West Virginia, has been named to the 2024 Maxwell Award watchlist. The Maxwell Award honors the best all-around player in college football and is among the most prestigious awards a college player can earn. Greene is one of 80 candidates and the only Mountaineer on the list.
The Big 12 has 17 candidates for the award, just behind the ACC, which leads with the most nominations. The past three winners of the Maxwell Award were Bryce Young of Alabama in 2021, Caleb Williams of USC in 2022, and Michael Penix Jr. of Washington in 2023.
A native of Tallahassee, Fla., Greene is the first West Virginia player to be nominated for the watchlist since J.T. Daniels in 2022. Greene had a stellar 2023 season, amassing 2,406 passing yards and 16 touchdowns, along with 772 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns. He concluded the season as the MVP of the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, racking up 292 all-purpose yards in WVU’s 30-10 victory over North Carolina.
As one of the premier dual-threat quarterbacks in the nation, Greene aims to build on his impressive 2023 performance and guide the Mountaineers to greater achievements in the 2024 season, starting with a significant matchup against Penn State in Morgantown.
