D’ Angelo Russell makes honest confession after playing alongside legendary Lebron James at Lakers

In a recent episode of the ‘Tidal League’ podcast, Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell shared his experiences of playing at a “high level” with LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Russell described the synergy with his teammates as euphoric over the past two seasons.

“Last year when I arrived, we clicked right away… We were playing at a high level, passing the ball back and forth effortlessly, even executing no-look lobs. That’s basketball, and we were in sync despite the limited time together. We faced adversity against Denver, but this year we had time to prep our core guys. Although we weren’t always healthy, we had a solid foundation from last year, and we played at a high level again. In the midst of it, I felt the need to win, but looking back, I realize I was really playing at a high level with a guy who dominates the game. For someone to be in that position, it’s incredible to see this dude play,” Russell said.

Drafted 2nd overall in 2015, Russell has played with some of the best, including Kobe Bryant. He gained firsthand insight into Bryant’s work ethic and understanding of the game.

After being traded from the Lakers, Russell had stints with the Nets, Warriors, and Timberwolves before returning to the Lakers in the 2023 NBA trade deadline as part of the Russell Westbrook deal. He initially thrived, averaging 17.4 points and 6.1 assists per game, helping the Lakers reach the Western Conference Finals.

Despite his contributions, the Lakers failed to replicate their success this past season, and Russell’s inconsistency was a major factor. His lapses on defense and streaky shooting led to reduced minutes. After opting into his $18.6 million player option, the Lakers have been exploring trade options.

For now, Russell remains with the Lakers. With LeBron James and Anthony Davis still performing at a high level, the Lakers will aim to recapture their peak form. For Russell, playing alongside LeBron has been transformative, potentially extending his career. As he heads into a contract year, expect Russell to be more aggressive and find new ways to maximize his impact.
