With less than a month until the college football season starts, the busiest offseason for uniform reveals in college football history continues.
The UAB Blazers joined in on Sunday, revealing a new look for the 2024 season.
Several changes stand out in this reveal. Most notably, the traditional gold helmet is absent. The gold helmet, a staple for UAB, was worn only twice last season. Additionally, the white uniforms, which previously featured gold numbers and ‘UAB’ lettering, now have green numbers and lettering.
Equally notable is the strong presence of green. UAB hasn’t used a green helmet since 1994, but it is now part of the rotation. The Blazers revealed three helmets: a green helmet with a white dragon logo, a white helmet with a green dragon logo (worn five times in 2023), and a white helmet with a lime green and black dragon logo, which is new this season.
UAB has categorized their uniforms into five groups: Home, Away, Birmingham Series Alternate, Smile-A-Mile, and Children’s Harbor.
Smile-A-Mile, an organization UAB partnered with last season, supports children diagnosed with cancer and their families. The uniforms for these games feature the patients’ names instead of the players’ names and are donated to the patients at the end of the season. The Blazers wore their black Smile-A-Mile uniforms twice last year, against Louisiana in September and Memphis in October.
The Children’s Harbor game, a modern college football tradition, returns for its eighth year. Children’s Harbor provides services and refuge for seriously ill children and their families. Like Smile-A-Mile, UAB wears special uniforms for this game, featuring gray and lime green as primary colors. The players wear the names of Children’s Harbor patients, and the uniforms are donated at the end of the season. In 2023, UAB played South Florida in the Children’s Harbor game and wore the uniforms again in November against Florida Atlantic. This year, the Blazers will host Tulsa on Nov. 2 for the Children’s Harbor game.
It’s uncertain if UAB will use uniform combinations outside of the five shown, but some combinations won’t work due to color mismatches.
The Home uniform is all green. The Away uniform is all white. The Birmingham Series Alternate uniform has a green helmet with a gray jersey and gray pants. The Smile-A-Mile uniform features a white helmet with a black jersey and black pants. The Children’s Harbor uniform has a white helmet with a gray jersey and gray pants.
UAB’s last uniform reveal was less than a year ago, on Aug. 9, 2023. Most jersey changes from 2023 to 2024 are subtle, such as the removal of shoulder sleeve stripes on the Smile-A-Mile and Children’s Harbor jerseys, with the significant change being the reduction of gold and increase of green in the white jerseys.
UAB will debut its new uniforms on Thursday, Aug. 29, when it hosts Alcorn State at Protective Stadium. They are likely to show off the road uniforms for the first time on Sept. 7 in a non-conference game against ULM.
