After a thorough two-week review with the Oklahoma State Cowboys, head coach Mike Gundy has agreed to a $1 million pay cut, marking a significant shift in his tenure with the program. This decision comes amid ongoing discussions about the direction of the team and Gundy’s role in its future success.
In a press conference held on Monday, Gundy addressed the media. “After careful consideration and many conversations with the administration, I have decided to accept the pay reduction,” Gundy stated. “I believe it’s in the best interest of the program and reflects my commitment to the team.”
Athletic Director Chad Weiberg echoed Gundy’s sentiments. “Mike has been an integral part of Oklahoma State for many years. His willingness to make this adjustment demonstrates his dedication to our student-athletes and our overall mission,” Weiberg said.
The review process, which began two weeks prior, included in-depth evaluations of the program’s performance, financial considerations, and future goals. The decision to reduce Gundy’s salary was mutually agreed upon as a step toward re-aligning resources and fostering a more sustainable financial model for the athletics department.
Gundy’s players also voiced their support for the coach. Senior quarterback Spencer Sanders shared his thoughts: “Coach Gundy has always been there for us, and this decision shows his true character. We’re ready to work even harder and make him proud.”
The pay cut is set to take effect immediately, and the saved funds will be redirected to support various aspects of the athletics department, including facilities, scholarships, and support services for student-athletes.
As the Cowboys prepare for the upcoming season, Gundy’s leadership and commitment remain steadfast. “We have a lot of work ahead, but I believe in this team and our potential to achieve great things,” Gundy concluded.
