UNC edge rusher Kaimon Rucker reveals how he plans to help the Tar Heels improve defense in 2024

North Carolina’s defense unanimously praised Geoff Collins’ infectious energy on the field during spring practice. Known as the “Minister of Mayhem,” the former Georgia Tech coach aims to foster a winning culture and aggressive identity for UNC’s defense in 2024. Kaimon Rucker noted that Collins made his intentions clear from the outset, instilling a belief that the Tar Heels could be one of the ACC’s elite defenses and among the best nationally.

Rucker supported Collins’ vision during the ACC Kickoff at the Hilton Uptown Charlotte hotel, emphasizing the importance of setting a high standard. “We never established a bar that we needed to jump over,” Rucker said. “From day one, he set the bar at being the best defense in college football. That has been our mantra throughout winter workouts, summer workouts, conditioning, and fall camp.”

Last season, Rucker recorded 61 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, a pass breakup, and 8.5 sacks, earning All-ACC Second Team honors. The fifth-year senior from Hartwell, Ga., observed Collins’ aggressive style during spring practice and expects the UNC defense to maintain that intensity leading up to the Aug. 29 season opener against Minnesota. Rucker aims to continue his productive play while providing leadership to his teammates.

“I’m going in with a happy heart,” Rucker said. “I’m willing to coach these guys up and be a good outlet for them. Anything they need to talk about, on or off the field, I’m there. I’m ready to have fun and dominate the season.”

A finger injury sidelined Rucker during training camp. He had surgery on a ruptured tendon in his right middle finger in April. At the ACC Kickoff, Rucker mentioned his finger was 100 percent structurally but 80 percent in range of motion, with no braces.

Rucker feels more confident each year and has become one of the ACC’s top pass rushers. He believes Collins will help the defense improve collectively. “Coach Collins is setting everyone up for success,” Rucker said. “There’s no such thing as over-communicating. You have to know your job and everyone else’s. It’s about holding each other to a professional standard for everyone’s success.”
