The former Oklahoma State backup quarterback and son of Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy will be playing football at Division II Emporia State this season. Gunnar graduated from Oklahoma State in December and is now a graduate transfer to Emporia State in Kansas. He has two years of eligibility remaining.
Gundy redshirted the 2021 season and then appeared in four games in each of the next two seasons. In 2023, he completed 62% of his passes, throwing for 202 yards and a touchdown. He was part of a three-quarterback rotation in the first three games of the season, sharing reps with Alan Bowman and Garret Rangel.
Gunnar walked on for the Cowboys before the 2021 season after receiving multiple FBS offers. He played in four games as a redshirt freshman in 2022, completing 19 of 39 pass attempts for 247 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 70 yards on 19 carries. His most notable play was a 10-yard quarterback sneak that gave Oklahoma State a 17-6 lead against Texas A&M in the Texas Bowl at the end of the 2023 season.
After the Big 12 Championship game, Gundy entered the NCAA Transfer Portal on Dec. 6 as a graduate transfer. Alan Bowman, a fellow quarterback, praised Gunnar’s impact on the Oklahoma State program, saying, “He’s a legend around here for sure… The best thing for him probably is to get out of Stillwater for a little bit and kind of experience something else.”
Gundy initially committed to Ohio in early January but later re-entered the transfer portal. He spent this spring working in Oklahoma State’s football office while continuing to train. Mike Gundy mentioned his son’s work in the office and plans to leave in May to play elsewhere.
Now, Gunnar will join a Division II team that had a 9-3 season. According to KSNT, he will likely compete with Daron Bryden, a transfer from Stony Brook, and long-time backup Chase Ricke for the starting quarterback position at Emporia State. Emporia, Kansas, is only three hours from Gundy’s hometown of Stillwater, much closer than the 14-hour drive to Athens, Ohio.
With Gundy’s departure, Oklahoma State’s 2024 roster will have five quarterbacks: Alan Bowman, Zane Flores, Garret Rangel, Maealiuaki Smith, and freshman walk-on Garret Wilson from Edmond.
